Judo Competition in Port Elizabeth, South Africa 2022

Open Judo Championships in South Africa

At the end of June 2022, the "South African Open Judo Championships" were hosted in Port Elizabeth.
Judoka from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Angola and Namibia participated. The Namibian team consisted of 8 grade 7 and 8 learners from DHPS, St. George's, Windhoek International School and Windhoek Gymnasium. They were accompanied by coach Sensei Stompie Matthyser and judoka Claudia Schlettwein.

The “Namibia Judo in Schools” project made a courageous decision to participate this year, secure the funding and organise the trip. Sensei Stompie proudly sums up: "We managed to raise funds for the participants' air tickets and accommodation, and we had sportswear made for everyone so that we could present ourselves as a unified Namibian team."
The DHPS team consisted of two girls and two boys, who competed for places in their respective categories: Amelie Dürrschmidt, Jana Mutschler, Linus Stritter and Kevin Kröller. Amelie Dürrschmidt won a silver medal and Jana Mutschler earned a bronze medal.
Sensei Stompie is a member of the International Judo Federation (IJF) and a DHPS Judo extra-mural coach. He is one of the coaches who is particularly committed to developing judo programmes for school children in Africa. Claudia Schlettwein is a judoka, sports teacher at the DHPS and she coaches the beginners in the judo extra-mural.
