Informative visit by B. Heyl: Commemorative places in Namibia

Bernd Heyl is a 70-year-old educator who used to be a teacher in Germany for 42 years. He also taught in Rome for seven years and has been organising study trips through Namibia since 2007. These study trips include visits to schools, meetings with important personalities of Namibia and historically significant places in the country. Thus the information-hungry travellers are brought closer to the history of Namibia on site. He is also the author of the book "Namibische Gedenk- und Erinnerungsorte" (Commemorative places in Namibia), which he presented a year ago at the Goethe Institute in Windhoek.

Because of his unique and extensive knowledge of Namibia's history, especially the Herero War, he gave a lecture on the 20th of April 2023 for the 11th and 12th graders at DHPS who were studying the history of Namibia. Mr. Heyl focused his lecture on the colonization of Namibia and the genocidal circumstances between 1904 and 1908. He spoke about the state of colonization before the war, the course of the war, places of remembrance in Namibia and Germany, racial segregation, the consequences of the war and answered many more questions from the curious students at the end of the lecture.

All in all, it was a really informative event that expanded many students' knowledge of Namibia's history.
