Music Week of German Schools in Southern Africa 2026

From 9 to 13 March 2026, Deutsche Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) turned into a vibrant hub of music, when the Music Week of German Schools Abroad in Southern Africa brought together around 150 musicians from Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Windhoek – including the DHPS delegation of 35 music enthusiasts, accompanied by their teachers Martina Visser and Ruben Viertel.

From the very first day, there was a special atmosphere and the warm welcome among peers sparked great anticipation. Learners reconnected with familiar faces, met new people and quickly formed friendships that extended well beyond their own schools.

The musical programme offered everything needed to develop young talent: intensive tutti, orchestra and choir rehearsals, collaboration with renowned musician Eddie Clayton and inspiring interaction with participants from the other schools. The DSJ’s professional organisation and technical support created ideal conditions for focused work and audible musical progress evident after just a few days.

Alongside the rehearsals, the programme also included joint activities like a visit to Rosebank Mall, a trip to Gold Reef City and lively bus journeys filled with singing and conversation. A braai evening with volleyball, a teachers’ band and a relaxed atmosphere rounded off the week. Staying with host families, the DHPS learners and teachers enjoyed a warm welcome and excellent care throughout the week.

The highlight of the week was the grand final concert: Choirs and orchestras from all four German schools abroad in Southern Africa performed together on the DSJ stage, presenting a varied and well-prepared musical programme that resonated deeply with both the audience and the performers.

DHPS would like to thank the Deutsche Schule Johannesburg for the organisation, the hospitality and unforgettable musical encounters.

Music Week 2026 was valuable in many ways – musically, personally and as a strong unifying experience – and has helped forge lasting bonds between the German schools abroad in the region.
