The
DHPS welcomed Florian Seitz, Deputy Ambassador of the German Embassy, for a
fascinating guest lecture.
His presentation focused on the United Nations and
its role in an increasingly complex and conflict-ridden world order. He vividly
explained the structure of the UN, including its main bodies, such as the
Security Council and the General Assembly, as well as its many
sub-organisations. Mr Seitz further highlighted the importance of peacekeeping
missions and the deployment of blue helmet soldiers in crisis regions.
Particular
attention was given to the work of a UN committee dealing with arms control in
space. With the steadily growing number of satellites in orbit and the
increasing problem of space debris, these issues are becoming ever more
significant. The discussion also explored how the term “weapon” should be
defined in the context of space.
Using the example of systems such as Starlink,
Mr Seitz showed that technologies can serve both civilian and military
purposes, depending on how they are used – a question that cannot be answered
with a simple yes or no.
The
lecture offered our learners in grades 10-12 exciting insights into current
security policy debates and illustrated how complex international diplomacy has
become in the 21st century. It was an extremely informative and engaging
exchange that made global politics tangible and understandable.
