Speech Competition 2018 - explosive topics and convincing arguments

On 12 June 2018, eloquent grade 9 and 11 learners were back on stage with powerful speeches, strong arguments and exciting presentations during the DHPS speech competition.

This year's topics could not have been more controversial - from arming teachers, plastic-free living, criticism in social media or the purpose of age restrictions: the teenagers had gained in-depth knowledge on their topics, prepared captivating speeches and surprised the audience with their linguistic and content sovereignty.

For the jury - comprising Ms Prof. Zappen Thomson (UNAM), Ms Suermann (Goethe Institute), Mr Gerber (DELK, pastor) and DHPS learner Mayke Ewald (last year's winner) - the selection of the winner posed a great challenge.

Especially for the juniors, grade 9 participants (German mother-tongue), the decision between Tiana Esslinger, with an expressive speech on the topic of plastic and Robin Beggs, who convinced the jury with strong arguments on age restriction, was very difficult. Ultimately however, preference was given to linguistics.

Among the German as a Foreign Language (DaF) learners, too, one highlight followed the next: The speeches delivered by Primerose Harases, who used strong arguments on the purpose of age restrictions and Iman Dundee, who accentuated her speech with exciting supports, captivated the audience. The jury selected the stronger arguments.

For the seniors (grade 11), Patrick Beggs impressed the jury with his sovereign lecture on "Fake News", followed by Sven Grünewald and Anna-Marie Ritter, who emotionally and self-critically illuminated today's youth.

In the DaF-section, Refilwe Masaka surprised the jury and the audience with her speech on media criticism, both in terms of content and language and achieved the first place just before Ralitsa Katzao, who presented her speech on #metoo in a friendly and interactive way.

Not only the jury, also DHPS principal Kristin Eichholz were impressed with the high standard and the young narrator's sovereignty - “Hats off!”

Congratulation to the winners and a big applause to all participants of the speech competition - we are proud of you.
