Focus on Afrikaans

Last year, the Afrikaans department of the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) organised a special day under the topic of “Afrikaans Dag”, for the first time, which was repeated with the grade 7 learners this year.

“This day is all about the Afrikaans language, culture and tradition", says Ms Lize-Mari Esterhuyse, Afrikaans teacher at the DHPS. There was "boeresport", a traditional “stokbrood” (bread on a stick) braai, "volkspele” (traditional games) and for the first time also “skattejag” – a treasure hunt with interesting Afrikaans quiz questions.

At the DHPS, Afrikaans is offered from grade 6. In order to give learners the opportunity to choose Afrikaans in grade 10 at either mother tongue or second-language level, the subject is taught on a very high level from an early stage and is supported by numerous communicative application methods.

“It is a fun-filled day, creating a love and understanding for the Afrikaans language and culture", Esterhuyse enthuses. The event was definitely great fun both for the learners and for the teachers.
