Eloquent, critical and entertaining speakers at the DHPS speech competition

Like every year, the best grade 9 and 11 speakers competed against each other on 13 July in the DHPS speech competition.
Interesting speeches by grade 9 learners dealt with questions whether a "drivers’ license with 16 years is meaningful" or if "social commitment is worthwhile".

The seniors (grade 11) held talks on topics of “Technology 2.0. - are we driving it too far?” or “School - what are we actually doing here?” In a serious but entertaining way, the audience was confronted with scenarios of self-acting and learning robots, artificial intelligence, self-propelled cars or a head transplant. Also the socio-critical view of the speakers, whether the consequence of e.g. unemployment of people replaced by robots is the price to be paid, left the listeners thinking.

The experienced jury (Jana Wall - Cultural Attaché of the German Embassy, Corinna Burth - responsible for PASCH of Goethe Institute Namibia, Erika von Wietersheim - author and editor and Aliena Rumpf - former DHPS head girl and last year's winner of the speech competition) did not have an easy task, especially be-cause all speeches were of high linguistic quality.

The two first-place finishers, Mayke Ewald (1st place) and Florian Hecht (2nd place) will represent the DHPS on 23 September 2017 at the national Kurt-Böhme speech competition, which will be organised by the DHPS this year.
