DIY at the CYC holiday programme: Made by Us

Everything revolved around plaster masks, wood and metal work, cooking, sewing and jewellery designing during the craftsmen's week at the DHPS Child and Youth Centre in the August holiday programme. In small groups, learners put their skills to the test, got acquainted with new materials and took their works of art home with them. The children were very proud of their DIY creations from painted plaster masks, kitchen magnets, wooden board games, pillows to bracelets and necklaces and eagerly looked forward to what awaited them the next day.

The learners prepared pizza for our lunch with great enthusiasm and the excursion to Nakara was another great highlight. We gained a comprehensive insight into all the processing steps from raw leather the final product. The children complained about the unfamiliar noises in the loud environment and the smells from the machines and the tannery. They were stunned by the final leather products in the showroom: handbags, purses and clothes. Each child received a piece of leather to take home.

Once again, we had an interesting, varied week at the Child and Youth Centre. And who knows, maybe some children discovered a new hobby, handy skill or even career aspirations.
