A successful African fairy tale: DHPS - Musical Kwela, Kwela!

Nowhere does the moon shine as bright as in Africa... but the long-awaited rain did not fall for too many moons already. Red dust and scorching heat leave the animals in distress. So they decide to follow the somewhat crazy advice of the Great Oracle and dig a waterhole. Only Tschipo, the bush rabbit does not help, but prefers to play the flute. When the animals finally reach the water, they believe that they will be saved. But this is only the beginning of an exiting story of the musical "Kwela, Kwela!” which was performed at the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS) on Wednesday, 18 July 2018.

Nobody would ever have expected it would be Tschipo, the flute-playing day-dreaming bush rabbit, who would eventually keep the bored ghosts from stealing the water.

With impressive costumes and masks, a great choir, energetic drummers and a professional teachers’ band and the friendly animals - about 50 musical participants from grades 3-6 of the DHPS captivated the audience and carried them away to the African bush with inspiring songs and amusing dialogue. Jake, the love-sick zebra, Tebogo, the overzealous go-away-bird, Frank, the poetic elephant and a slightly aged owl amused the audience.

In January already, the team decided to perform an African musical and rehearsals started, leaving the actors little time to learn the lyrics for this impressive, perfect production of "Kwela, Kwela” in the DHPS auditorium. Once again, the DHPS theatre and musical team, Carina Schumacher and Martina Visser have adapted a play to the children's environment. Together with teachers and parents, excellent costumes and an authentic stage design were created.
