DHPS Centre for Diagnosis and Special Education |
The DHPS offers special remedial classes for pupils with dyslexia and / or dyscalculia. Specially trained teachers who work in those fields cooperate closely with the parents, the subject teachers, the class teachers and the school psychologist.-
Should dyslexia (LRS) or dyscalculia be assumed during ordinary lessons the class teachers or subject teachers contact the parents and make an appointment with the school psychologist / external psychologist.
- Applying a variety of standardized tests the relevant psychologist is in a position to establish an accurate assessment of the pupil’s weaknesses and learning difficulties. This assessment is a precondition for taking part in LRS / dyscalculia remedial lessons and helps the teacher to design his specific training. Subsequently the LRS-teachers establish an individual support plan.
- Lessons in LRS / dyscalculia are characterized by a lively change of methods and the use of different materials. They are conducted in small groups in the morning and are available for a fee (see DHPS schedule of fees) and are arranged after consultations with the individual subject teachers of the pupil.
pictures © DHPS Windhoek - It is important for us to start working with the relevant child on the basis of its current abilities and shortcomings.
The solution of small step-by-step problems provides the child with the fundamental experience of having a basic competence in the field of LRS which can be used and further developed in the learning process.
How do we assist?
Based on the relevant formal curriculum for the primary school we aim at a holistic support: - Establishing stable self-esteem,
- creating a motivating sense of achievement,
- improving perceptual capacity,
- assisting in the reduction of psycho-somatic dysfunctions,
- improving the reading and writing skills.
The promotion refers to the field of the most important preconditions for learning such as - balance exercises,
- exercises for acoustic and visual perception and
- the field of reading, writing and calculating.
Disadvantage compensation or a deviation from the general guidelines for assessment can be implemented in individual cases after a consultation with the class and / or subject teacher considering the pupil’s personality.
