Afrikaans at DHPS is taught from Grade 6 to Grade 12

The syllabi

Afrikaans Grade 6 – 9

Grammar:

In the first year the basics of the language is taught. Books which have been compiled by the teachers themselves are used. There are currently no textbooks available for children who start Afrikaans in grade 6. After the first introduction to and the establishment of the basics of the language, the pupils are taught on a first language level up to grade 9.

Literature:

Literature that will interest the children and which is not too difficult for their level of understanding is read and discussed, so are poems that are topic related. Music and Afrikaans songs are also sung to practice oral use of the language.

Assessment:

Short essays, comprehension tests, grammar tests as well as spelling tests are written. Oral marks are allocated for either prepared or unprepared work.

Afrikaans Grade 10 to 12

At this level pupils may choose between first- or second language Afrikaans in NSSC which are taught on a higher level. The following papers are written for assessment at the end of each grade, including grade 12 final exams:
  • Paper 1 – Reading and directed writing 
  • Paper 2 – Continuous writing
  • Paper 3 – Either an oral exam on prescribed books for Afrikaans first language or a written exam on the prescribed books (First language only). AS level - voluntary oral at the end of grade 12 (Second language).

For Afrikaans first language only: in grade 10 books are chosen by the teachers, read and discussed in preparation for the work to be done in grade 11 and 12. In grade 11 and 12 prescribed books are read and discussed in detail. Pupils work out questions based on the books in preparation for the exams. It is important that students realize that the language is taught on a higher level, therefore, reading of different books and articles in Afrikaans are important to improve general knowledge and vocabulary.

Afrikaans DIAP Grade 10-12

  • Afrikaans is taught as a foreign language in these classes.
  • Emphasis is placed upon the reading of theme related literature and articles.
  • Pupils are expected to write essays based upon the content of the prescribed books and must then be able to voice their own opinion based on the theme discussed in the books.
  • Assessments consists of written class tests, as well as continuous oral assessment which can be either prepared or unprepared.
  • The final written exam is approved and assessed by external moderators.
