Lessons for a wind orchestra (BläserKlasse) have now started at DHPS – this special tuition will be offered during regular music lessons.

The first class for a wind orchestra (BläserKlasse) in school on the African continent has started at the beginning of the school year 2012. 15 learners in Grade 5 at the DHPS will be afforded the opportunity to study a wind instrument of their choice. These classes will be taught by lecturers of the College of the Arts during regular music lessons.

This idea originated in Europe and will now be put into practice at the DHPS. The symphonic wind orchestra (BläserKlasse) will be adhering to a highly developed syllabus for music- and instrumental lessons in bigger learning groups.

The BläserKlasse with principal Mrs. M. Pfänder

  • It is a form of teaching where every learner can be trained systematically in a wind instrument and plays in the class orchestra from the very beginning.
  • This teaching method was initiated twenty years ago and is being developed continuously. It is regarded as the most successful teaching model for making music in class.
  • In the German speaking areas of Europe about 2000 wind orchestra groups (BläserKlassen) in more than 1000 schools and clubs are active.

The BläserKlasse 2012 DHPS

The idea is as easy as it is brilliant:
  • The learners of a grade form a symphonic wind orchestra= BläserKlasse in music lessons.
  • The conductor of this orchestra is the music teacher of the school.
  • Everybody in class is trained and plays a wind instrument – e.g. flute or tuba – under the guidance of experienced instrument educators.
  • No previous experience is required.
  • Due to the outstanding teaching methodology in “Essential Elements”, the qualification of the music teacher as well as the quality of the wind instruments, fun and success will be guaranteed.
  • The learners get together weekly in a double period and follow the music syllabus in a practical way with their different instruments.
  • In addition the different instrumental groups, e.g. flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, trombone and tuba, will receive weekly individual lessons.

The first public concert is scheduled for 10 August 2012 as part of this year’s musical days, a meeting of all musicians of German schools abroad in Southern Africa, which will be held at the DHPS.
